My notes

Visas

Africa | Asia | America | Europe

Many countries have a bizarre rule requiring you to have a round-trip flight and a hotel reservation to apply for visa, even if you intend to travel by land. Even if you don't need a visa, the airport staff might not let you on the plane without a return/onward ticket (see here or see here). One way around is to get a "fake" flight itinerary (at your own risk):

  • Use a booking website that lets you choose bank transfer or payment at airline office as payment method (fareboom.com, klm.com, emirates.com, yatra.com(?)). You will get a booking number that you can use on the airline's website to find your reservation. It looks like a normal reservation but will cancel automatically after a few days if you don't complete the payment.
  • Buy a refundable ticket directly from an airline's website, e.g. a business class ticket. Make sure cancellation is 100% free.
  • US-based booking websites, e.g. expedia.com, orbitz.com (must use their US website with .com domian) offer free cancellation within 24 hours.
  • "Fake" hotel booking: many websites offer free cancellation.
